Most rental companies charge several times more for a full tank than fuel prices at gas stations would suggest, or they charge dozens of euros just for the privilege of picking up and returning the car with the same amount of fuel. A 200-euro penalty for returning the car with slightly less fuel is also a common practice—one you often only learn about from your credit card statement.

Number 6 – The rental company has your credit card details

The rental company has charged your credit card, which in practice means that if it determines any deviation from the terms and conditions, it can withdraw money from your card for up to a month or even longer—in practice, for almost anything.

Number 7 – Selling insurance on a “you must decide” basis

On site, it often turns out that you either choose additional insurance—often costing dozens of euros per day—or the deposit on your card will be even higher than stated on the website, for example 2,000 euros.
